There Was a Time, I Need Not Name
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

    1
  1.   There was a time, I need not name,
  2.      Since it will ne’er forgotten be,
  3.   When all our feelings were the same
  4.      As still my soul hath been to thee.

    2
  5.   And from that hour when first thy tongue
  6.      Confess’d a love which equall’d mine,
  7.   Though many a grief my heart hath wrung,
  8.      Unknown, and thus unfelt, by thine,

    3
  9.   None, none hath sunk so deep as this—
  10.      To think how all that love hath flown;
  11.   Transient as every faithless kiss,
  12.      But transient in thy breast alone.

    4
  13.   And yet my heart some solace knew,
  14.      When late I heard thy lips declare,
  15.   In accents once imagined true,
  16.      Remembrance of the days that were.

    5
  17.   Yes! my adored, yet most unkind!
  18.      Though thou wilt never love again,
  19.   To me ’tis doubly sweet to find
  20.      Remembrance of that love remain.

    6
  21.   Yes! ’tis a glorious thought to me,
  22.      Nor longer shall my soul repine,
  23.   Whate’er thou art or e’er shalt be,
  24.      Thou hast been dearly, solely mine.
