Stanzas To Jessy
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

(composed: July 1807)

    1
  1.   There is a mystic thread of life
  2.      So dearly wreath’d with mine alone,
  3.   That Destiny’s relentless knife
  4.      At once must sever both, or none.

    2
  5.   There is a Form on which these eyes
  6.      Have fondly gazed with such delight—
  7.   By day, that Form their joy supplies,
  8.      And Dreams restore it, through the night.

    3
  9.   There is a Voice whose tones inspire
  10.      Such softened feelings in my breast,
  11.   I would not hear a Seraph Choir,
  12.      Unless that voice could join the rest.

    4
  13.   There is a Face whose Blushes tell
  14.      Affection’s tale upon the cheek,
  15.   But pallid at our fond farewell,
  16.      Proclaims more love than words can speak.

    5
  17.   There is a Lip, which mine has prest,
  18.      But none had ever prest before;
  19.   It vowed to make me sweetly blest,
  20.      That mine alone should press it more.

    6
  21.   There is a Bosom all my own,
  22.      Has pillow’d oft this aching head,
  23.   A Mouth which smiles on me alone,
  24.      An Eye, whose tears with mine are shed.

    7
  25.   There are two Hearts whose movements thrill,
  26.      In unison so closely sweet,
  27.   That Pulse to Pulse responsive still
  28.      They Both must heave, or cease to beat.

    8
  29.   There are two Souls, whose equal flow
  30.      In gentle stream so calmly run,
  31.   That when they part—they part?—ah no!
  32.      They cannot part—those Souls are One.
