On Jordan’s Banks
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

(From Hebrew Melodies - 1815)

    1
  1.   On Jordan’s banks the Arab’s camels stray,
  2.   On Sion’s hill the false one’s votaries pray,
  3.      The Baal-adorer bows on Sinai’s steep—
  4.      Yet there—even there—Oh God! thy thunders sleep.

    2
  5.   There—where thy finger scorch’d the tablet stone.
  6.   There—where thy Shadow to thy people shone!
  7.      Thy Glory shrouded in its garb of fire:—
  8.      Thyself—none living see and not expire!—

    3
  9.   Oh! in the lightning—let thy glance appear!
  10.   Sweep from his shiver’d hand the oppressor’s spear:
  11.      How long by tyrants shall thy land be trod!
  12.      How long thy temple worshipless! Oh God?
