Jeptha’s Daughter
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

(From Hebrew Melodies - 1815)

    1
  1.   Since our Country—our God—Oh my Sire—
  2.   Demand that thy daughter expire;
  3.      Since thy triumph was brought by thy vow—
  4.      Strike the bosom that’s bared for thee now!

    2
  5.   And the voice of my mourning is o’er—
  6.   And the mountains behold me no more:
  7.      If the hand that I love lay me low,
  8.      There cannot be pain in the blow!

    3
  9.   And of this—Oh! my Father!—be sure
  10.   That the blood of thy child is as pure—
  11.      As the blessing I beg ’ere it flow—
  12.      And the last thought that soothes me below.

    4
  13.   Though the virgins of Salem lament,
  14.   Be the judge and the Hero unbent!
  15.      I have won the great battle for thee,
  16.      And my Father and Country are free!

    5
  17.   When this blood of thy giving hath gush’d—
  18.   When the voice that thou lovest is hush’d—
  19.      Let my Memory still be thy pride,
  20.      And forget not, I smiled as I died!
