I Saw Thee Weep
by George Gordon, Lord Byron

(From Hebrew Melodies - 1815)

    1
  1.   I saw thee weep—the big bright tear
  2.      Came o’er that eye of blue;
  3.   And then methought it did appear
  4.      A violet dropping dew:
  5.   I saw thee smile—the sapphire’s blaze
  6.      Beside thee ceased to shine;
  7.   It could not match the living rays
  8.      That filled that glance of thine.

    2
  9.   As clouds from yonder sun receive
  10.      A deep and mellow dye,
  11.   Which scarce the shade of coming eve
  12.      Can banish from the sky,
  13.   Those smiles unto the moodiest mind
  14.      Their own pure joy impart;
  15.   Their sunshine leaves a glow behind
  16.      That lightens o’er the heart.
